Grown-up rocker David Cook has triumphed over smooth-voiced teen David Archuleta to become the new "American Idol."

While Archuleta was heaped with praise by the judges the night before, the voters decided otherwise -- and it wasn't even close. Host Ryan Seacrest said during Wednesday's show that 12 million votes was the difference.

Cook was overcome by emotion, bending toward the stage after his name was announced.

"This is amazing," he said. "This is all your fault," he added, addressing the brother who Cook had accompanied to the "Idol" audition that started it all.

Cook immediately took the microphone and began to sing "Time of my Life," which won the annual "Idol songwriting competition."

ReviewReviewReviewReviewReviewKobe Bryant wins 1st MVP awardMay 7, '08 2:37 AM
for everyone
Category:Other
Finally, an MVP award for Kobe Bryant. Regarded as the NBA’s best player for several years but never its most valuable, Bryant earned the honor at last on Tuesday after leading the Los Angeles Lakers to the best record in the Western Conference.

He called the award a blessing and an honor and emphasized that he wants another trophy this year.

“It’s Hollywood, it’s a movie script. The perfect ending would be for us to hold a championship trophy at the end of it,” Bryant said at a news conference attended by his teammates, club officials, his wife and two daughters.

“This is an award I couldn’t have won on my own. I can’t thank these guys (his teammates) enough. These are my guys, these are my brothers. Let’s get ready for tomorrow.”

The Lakers try to take a 2-0 lead against Utah in their conference semifinal on Wednesday night. Bryant will receive the MVP trophy from commissioner David Stern before the game.

Bryant entered the season as the league’s two-time defending scoring champion. He had finished as high as third in the MVP voting twice—after the 2002-03 season, when he averaged 30 points for the first time, and last year when Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki won.

“I don’t know anybody who’s ever deserved this trophy more. I don’t know anybody who’s ever worked as hard to accomplish what he’s accomplished,” said Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who had five-time MVP Michael Jordan with Chicago and was at the Lakers’ helm when Shaquille O’Neal won the award in 2000.

Bryant received 82-first-place votes and 1,100 points in the media vote. He was followed by New Orleans’ Chris Paul (28 and 894), Boston’s Kevin Garnett (15 and 670) and Cleveland’s LeBron James (1 and 438).

“I’ve said since two, three years ago that Kobe Bryant is the best player in the league,” James said before the Cavaliers faced the Celtics in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. “He’s been the best player the last five, six years. I’m glad he won it. His team had a great year, finishing first in the West.”

This season there was no denying the Lakers’ 6-foot-6 star. Los Angeles rose to the top of the West despite key injuries and following Bryant’s trade demands last spring when his team was eliminated in the first round by Phoenix for the second straight year.

Bryant averaged 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.84 steals while playing all 82 games despite tearing a ligament in his right pinkie in February. He put off surgery until after the Olympics.

The knock on the 29-year-old Bryant had been that he didn’t make those around him better—not anymore.

“He’s deserving in this particular season with all of the question marks and everything going on coming into the season and the uncertainty,” teammate Derek Fisher said. “Not only did he statistically have an MVP type of season, everybody can reasonably say they were better this year because of what he did. He met the so-called criteria, elevating his teammates’ games.”

Word leaked last Friday night that Bryant had won the award.

Bryant, second in the NBA in scoring behind James, is the first Laker to win the MVP award since O’Neal. Other Lakers to win since the award was first presented in 1956 were Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson—each three times. Abdul-Jabbar also won three with Milwaukee.

“I didn’t expect this award would come to me,” Bryant said. “I’m surprised. I’ve played pretty well in other seasons. Our team hasn’t been as good. Things just fell into place.”

Bryant and O’Neal led the Lakers to three consecutive championships, from 2000-02, and a berth in the finals in 2004. The Lakers hadn’t won a playoff series since until sweeping Denver in the first round last month.

Bryant and O’Neal were often at odds during their eight years together. Assistant coach Brian Shaw, who played for the Lakers from 1999-03, has noticed a big difference in Bryant.

“He’s a much better teammate now than he was in the championship days. That’s a credit to his maturation. There were definitely times when he was not a good teammate. No one worked harder than he did. The same is true today,” Shaw said.

“In terms of connecting with his teammates off the court, he didn’t do that very much. Now, from what I hear, he goes out to dinner with them all the time. Who knows? Maybe he likes these teammates better than us,” Shaw added with a laugh.

Bryant has said this was his best regular season and his most enjoyable— very different from his feelings last spring. First, he challenged the Lakers to upgrade their roster, then demanded a trade.

Things quieted down and Bryant said all the right things during training camp until Lakers owner Jerry Buss said he would listen to trade offers. That upset Bryant again, but he promised he would focus on basketball once the season began.

And so he did.

After a 9-8 start, the Lakers put it together. The most obvious upgrades were Fisher and Pau Gasol, acquired Feb. 1 from Memphis. The Lakers already had Andrew Bynum, Jordan Farmar and Sasha Vujacic—all former first-round draft choices—when Bryant had his tirade last spring. All three, especially the 20-year-old Bynum, showed great improvement, but the 7-footer hasn’t played since injuring his left knee Jan. 13.

Another talented newcomer, Trevor Ariza, has been sidelined since breaking his right foot Jan. 20. Gasol missed nine games late in the season because of a sprained ankle.

Through it all, led by their MVP, the Lakers kept winning. And now they appear to have as good a chance as any team to win another NBA championship.

ReviewReviewReviewReviewReviewImportance of Drinking Water and Water TherapyApr 19, '08 7:49 AM
for everyone
Category:Other
It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven its value. We publish below a description of use of water for our readers. For old and serious diseases as well as modern illnesses the water treatment had been found successful by a Japanese medical society as a 100% cure for the following diseases:

Headache, body ache, heart system, arthritis, fast heart beat, epilepsy, excess fatness, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, kidney and urine diseases, vomiting, gastritis, diarrhea, piles, diabetes, constipation, all eye diseases, womb, cancer and menstrual disorders, ear nose and throat diseases.

METHOD OF TREATMENT:

1. As you wake up in the morning before brushing teeth, drink 4 x 160ml glasses of water.
2. Brush and clean the mouth but do not eat or drink anything for 45 minutes.
3. After 45 minutes you may eat and drink as normal.
4. After 15 minutes of breakfast, lunch and dinner do not eat or drink anything for 2
hours.
5. Those who are old or sick and are unable to drink 4 glasses of water at the
beginning may commence by taking little water and gradually increase it to 4 glasses per day.
6. The above method of treatment will cure diseases of the sick and others can
enjoy a healthy life.

The following list gives the number of days of treatment required to cure/control/reduce main diseases:

1. High Blood Pressure – 30 days
2. Gastric – 10 days
3. Diabetes – 30 days
4. Constipation – 10 days
5. Cancer – 180 days
6. TB – 90 days
7. Arthritis patients should follow the above treatment only for 3 days in the 1st week, and from 2nd week onwards – daily.

This treatment method has no side effects, however at the commencement of treatment you may have to urinate a few times. It is better if we continue this and make this procedure as a routine work in our life.

Drink Water and Stay healthy and Active. This makes sense the Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals not cold water, maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!!

Nothing to lose, everything to gain...

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks: Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep.

ReviewReviewReviewReviewReviewThe Millennium Development Goals 2015Apr 8, '08 3:27 AM
for everyone
Category:Other
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are a set of eight time-bound, concrete and specific targets aimed at significantly reducing, if not decisively eradicating poverty, by the year 2015:

1. Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger;
2. Achieving universal primary education;
3. Promoting gender equality and empowering women;
4. Reducing child mortality;
5. Improving maternal health;
6. Combating HIV /AIDS, malaria and other diseases;
7. Ensuring environmental sustainability; and,
8. Developing global partnerships for development.

Global Commitment to the Millennium Development Goals
In September 2000, one hundred and eighty-nine UN member-countries -- rich and poor alike -- reaffirmed their commitment to peace and security, good governance, and attention to the most vulnerable with the adoption of the Millennium Declaration.

Containing commitments to achieve the eight MDGs and the specific targets under them by 2015, the Millennium Declaration reflects the vision of entire nations, working together with international and country-based organizations, to wipe out poverty and the worst forms of human deprivation, and lay the foundations for sustainable human development by the year 2015.

The overarching need is to ensure that the MDGs are integrated into and given top priority in each committed country's development planning efforts: with efficient monitoring, localization, and advocacy systems put in place; crucial financing secured; multisectoral support mobilized; and an enabling environment created with an MDG-responsive policy framework and legislation.

Philippine Commitment to the Millennium Development Goals
Since the Philippines first resolved to adopt the MDGs, it has made encouraging strides, particularly towards the attainment of targets on reducing extreme poverty; child mortality; the incidence of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria; on improving gender equality in education; and improving households' adequate dietary intake as well as access to safe drinking water.

Underpinning these gains are two facts. First, the MDGs have been tightly integrated into the Medium-Term Philippine Development Plan (MTPDP) 2004-2010, thus allowing government strategies, policies and action plans to simultaneously address national and MDG targets. Second, the government has continually closely monitored its own rate of progress in MDG indicators, and used this information to fine-tune its planning and implementation, especially to ensure effective implementation at the local level.

Nevertheless, serious challenges and threats remain with regard to targets on maternal health, access to reproductive health services, nutrition, primary education, and environmental sustainability. And glaring disparities across regions persist, as do severe funding constraints.

The overall probability of attaining the targets remains high, though dependent largely on the confluence of several factors, among them: scaling up of current efforts on all target areas; more efficient synchronization and allocation of available limited resources, including mobilization of additional resources; and stronger advocacy for and enhanced capability to implement the MDGs at the local level.

Goal 1: Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger
Target 1: Halve the proportion of people living in extreme poverty between 1990 and 2015
Target 2: Halve the proportion of population below the minimum level of dietary energy consumption and halve the proportion of underweight children under five years old

Goal 2: Achieving universal primary education
Target 3: Achieve universal access to primary education by 2015

Goal 3: Promoting gender equality and empowering women
Target 4: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and in all levels of education no later than 2015

Goal 4: Reducing child mortality
Target 5: Reduce children under-five mortality rate by two-thirds by 2015

Goal 5: Improving maternal health
Target 6: Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015 the maternal mortality ratio
Target 7: Increase access to reproductive health services to 60 percent by 2010 and 80 percent by 2015

Goal 6: Combating HIV /AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Target 8: Halt and reverse the spread of HIV and AIDS by 2015
Target 9: Halt and reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases by 2015

Goal 7: Ensuring environmental sustainability
Target 10: Implement national strategies for sustainable development by 2005, to reverse loss of environmental resources by 2015
Target 11: Halve the proportion of people with no access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation or those who cannot afford it by 2015
Target 12: Achieve a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers by 2020

Goal 8: Developing global partnerships for development
Target 13: Develop further an open, rule-based predictable, non-discriminatory trading and financial system; include a commitment to good governance, development, and poverty reduction, both nationally and internationally
Target 14: Deal comprehensively with the debt problems of developing countries through national and international measures in order to make debts sustainable in the long run
Target 15: Provide access to affordable essential drugs, in cooperation with pharmaceutical industries

UNDP supports MDG-based national development strategies
The UN System is helping countries improve their capacity to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). To support this effort, UNDP and the Millennium Project have designed a comprehensive set of services to support MDG-based national development strategies. These services focus on three pillars:

MDG-based diagnostics and investment planning (technical and financial assistance needed to achieve the MDGs over the long term); Widening policy options and choices (sectoral and cross-sectoral policy reforms and frameworks needed to accelerate growth with equity and promote long-term human development); and Strengthening national capacity (enable effective service delivery at the national and local levels).

Millennium Project
The Millennium Project was commissioned by the United Nations Secretary-General in 2002, aims at proposing the best strategies for meeting the MDGs and at developing a concrete action plan for the world to reverse the grinding poverty, hunger and disease affecting billions of people.

Headed by Professor Jeffrey Sachs, the Millennium Project is an independent advisory body and presented its final recommendations, Investing in Development: A Practical Plan to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals to the Secretary-General in January 2005.

The bulk of the Project’s work has been carried out by 10 thematic Task Forces comprising a total of more than 250 experts from around the world including: researchers and scientists; policymakers; representatives of NGOs, UN agencies, the World Bank, IMF and the private sector. Since their establishment, the Task Forces have conducted extensive research within their fields of expertise to produce recommendations for meeting the Millennium Development Goals. The ongoing work of the Project is led by a secretariat housed at UNDP headquarters in New York.

Partnerships
Partnerships are particularly important for UNDP's work and for achieving the MDGs. The eighth MDG, "To develop a global partnership for development," explicitly calls for partnerships, which are essential at all levels-local, national, global-for the attainment of the other seven goals and the values and actions set out in the Millennium Declaration.

UNDP's partners include governments, other UN agencies, international financial institutions, bilateral agencies, the private sector and civil society. Across countries and regions, UNDP as the UN's global development network, uses its global presence to bring together partners from many different backgrounds to share expertise, launch joint ventures and develop long-term solutions.

Did you know?

If worldwide trends continue through 2015, the reduction in mortality among children under five will be about one quarter, far from the target of a two thirds reduction.

Global progress
Are we on track to meet the MDGs by 2015?
So far there are significant advances together with important set-backs. Every region faces particular challenges but has the opportunity to work together in order to achieve the MDGs. Although there is a long way to go, we know that the goals are achievable with global political support, strong partnerships and coordinated efforts. We also know that if some trends persist, some of the goals will be very difficult to reach.

Progress so far:
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty & hunger
Global poverty rates are falling, led by Asia. But millions more people have sunk deep into poverty in sub- Saharan Africa, where the poor are getting poorer.

Progress has been made against hunger, but slow growth of agricultural output and expanding populations have led to setbacks in some regions. Since 1990, millions more people are chronically hungry in sub- Saharan Africa and in Southern Asia, where half the children under age 5 are malnourished.

Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
Five developing regions are approaching universal enrolment. But in sub-Saharan Africa, fewer than two thirds of children are enrolled in primary school.

Other regions, including Southern Asia and Oceania, also have a long way to go. In these regions and elsewhere, increased enrolment must be accompanied by efforts to ensure that all children remain in school and receive a high-quality education.

Goal 3: Promote gender equality & empower women
The gender gap is closing — albeit slowly — in primary school enrolment in the developing world. This is a first step towards easing long-standing inequalities between women and men. In almost all developing regions, women represent a smaller share of wage earners than men and are often relegated to insecure and poorly paid jobs.

Though progress is being made, women still lack equal representation at the highest levels of government, holding only 16 per cent of parliamentary seats worldwide.

Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Death rates in children under age 5 are dropping. But not fast enough. Eleven million children a year — 30,000 a day — die from preventable or treatable causes. Most of these lives could be saved by expanding existing programmes that promote simple, low-cost solutions.

Goal 5: Improve maternal health
More than half a million women die each year during pregnancy or childbirth. Twenty times that number suffer serious injury or disability. Some progress has been made in reducing maternal deaths in developing regions, but not in the countries where giving birth is most risky.

Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria & other diseases
AIDS has become the leading cause of premature death in sub-Saharan Africa and the fourth largest killer worldwide. In the European countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and parts of Asia, HIV is spreading at an alarming rate. Though new drug treatments prolong life, there is no cure for AIDS, and prevention efforts must be intensified in every region of the world if the target is to be reached.

Malaria and tuberculosis together kill nearly as many people each year as AIDS, and represent a severe drain on national economies. Ninety per cent of malaria deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa, where prevention and treatment efforts are being scaled up. Tuberculosis is on the rise, partly as a result of HIV/AIDS, though a new international protocol to detect and treat the disease is showing promise.

Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Most countries have committed to the principles of sustainable development. But this has not resulted in sufficient progress to reverse the loss of the world’s environmental resources. Achieving the goal will require greater attention to the plight of the poor, whose day-to-day subsistence is often directly linked to the natural resources around them, and an unprecedented level of global cooperation. Action to prevent further deterioration of the ozone layer shows that progress is possible.

Access to safe drinking water has increased, but half the developing world still lack toilets or other forms of basic sanitation. Nearly 1 billion people live in urban slums because the growth of the urban population is outpacing improvements in housing and the availability of productive jobs.

Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development
The United Nations Millennium Declaration represents a global social compact: developing countries will do more to ensure their own development, and developed countries will support them through aid, debt relief and better opportunities for trade. Progress in each of these areas has already begun to yield results. But developed countries have fallen short of targets they have set for themselves.

To achieve the Millennium Development Goals, increased aid and debt relief must be accompanied by further opening of trade, accelerated transfer of technology and improved employment opportunities for the growing ranks of young people in the developing world.

Vote for Randy Vitales in iTALENTSTAR – Asia ’s first-ever online talent competition. ADD OFFICIAL ITALENTSTAR PROFILE: http://profiles.friendster.com/italentphm09

CONCEPT OF iTALENTSTAR
iTALENTSTAR is an online talent competition involving participants from four Southeast Asian countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines - an interactive experience that kicks off from 14 February 2008.

The first talent competition of its kind in Asia, iTALENTSTAR is held in collaboration with Friendster – the No. 1 online social networking portal in Southeast Asia. With over 28.4 millions unique users globally and 25 millions across the asia pacific regions, the Friendster network promises to make iTALENTSTAR a talent search of unprecedented proportions.

Targeting internet-savvy socially-active networkers of minimum 16 years of age, iTALENTSTAR seeks to uncover the hidden talents behind the web.

Propelling Personal Media To The Next Height
The vision of iTALENTSTAR is to showcase online users’ grasp of Web 2.0 technology – also known as User-Generated Content Creation that includes online video, photos, and blogging. In iTALENTSTAR, the contestants (known as iTALENTS) display their dynamic personalities and creative wit as they undergo a series of ‘challenges’ that stimulate self-expression and the uniqueness of the individual.

We now live in a truly “digital” era, where society’s dependence and, interestingly, its use of technology are overwhelming. The paradigm has shifted such that our consumption of traditional, mass media (television, radio and print) has become nearly replaced by that of online, personal media – i.e. internet media that we digest at our own time and in the mode that we deem meaningful.

Likewise, the communicative methods people employ over time have changed. The online-savvy users today embrace personal media – e-mail, instant messaging and Web 2.0 technology – to share their passions and ideas.

But who are those people who aspire the most number of others with their passion and outlook? These are the people iTALENTSTAR aims to discover. In iTALENTSTAR, we marry this new generation of empowering individuals who yearn to create their own contents, within a competitive environment.

iTALENTSTAR will steer social networkers towards a new wave of personal media, which will no doubt sweep the online community and further its progress towards a more dynamic and technologically sophisticated society.

for everyone

With enough black sheep in his family to constitute a herd, Mr. McMahon (who is not exactly “Father of the Year” material, either) has tried over the years to shepherd his son Shane and daughter Stephanie using his unique brand of “tough love.” For months, the Chairman has been testing and trying to shape his bastard son, Hornswoggle, with these same questionable tactics.

He’s thrown the little guy into match after match with some of the scariest Superstars in WWE. As a result, Hornswoggle has not only survived, he’s thrived. Other celebrity parents have tried the same tough love course, with varying degrees of success. And some celeb parents may have wanted to take a Tough Love 101 course. Tough love can sometimes be the stitch that holds families together, or it can provide tension enough to tear a family apart at the seams. Herewith, a few varying examples:

THE SPEARS FAMILY
With the problems swirling around the Spears’ girls – Britney and Jamie Lynn – might tough love have helped? Perhaps it was a lack of tough love that set the sisters on their respective rocky roads: Britney recently suffered a breakdown and has been entangled in a custody battle following a messy divorce from Kevin Federline. (And that’s just the start of her woes.) Jamie Lynn finds herself pregnant at 16. Ma and Pa Spears now seem to be adopting the Chairman’s approach with rumors of an intervention. But if they’d taken the path laid out by Mr. McMahon earlier, how might the daughters have turned out differently?

THE CULKINS
Home Alone sensation Macaulay Culkin accused his father, Kit, of laying the tough love on a little too thick. The young star charged Kit of using humiliation and physical abuse to rule him, his mother and his six siblings. So allegedly domineering was the elder Culkin, in fact, that Macaulay had his parents legally blocked from controlling his $17 million fortune. In this case, the tough love approach backfired, causing the family to splinter and father and son to become forever estranged.

USHER AND MOM
R&B singer Usher found out that nobody whips up a serving of tough love quite like mama. When the crooner planned to marry his stylist, Tameka Foster, his mother Jonetta let him know, in no uncertain terms, that she did not approve of the union. The singer then fired his mother as his manager, and when he decided to follow through with the wedding, Jonetta told him that she refused to attend. The tough love prompted Usher to back down and initially call off the nuptials. However, ultimately, Usher and Foster did walk down the aisle together, and tough love suffered a tough loss.

THE LOHANS
The jury is still out on whether the effects of tough love have taken hold of starlet Lindsay Lohan. Despite enduring a number of car crashes and stints in rehab, “LiLo” seems determined to turn her life around and put the pitfalls of young Hollywood behind her. While Lohan’s father, Michael, has practiced tough love with his daughter over the years, he’s had his own difficulties, having served two years in jail for various crimes. Whether Lohan will avoid her father’s fate and learn the lessons of tough love remains to be seen.
