| | I hosted swimming competition, Pasiklaban 2008, and did my best to "revolutionize" the hosting style with my spontanous and energetic approach. It was such an experience to host a swimming competition for a second time.
I do miss the smell of chlorine in the morning, I miss the entire "swimming competition" atmosphere, and I was really excited to host the two days of hardcore swimming meet held in Rizal Memorial last July 26 to 27, 2008. Hosting a swimming event is so much different than other hosting gigs, for a minimum of 8 hours you have the mic and everyone will hear your voice at least every minute.
I was a swimmer for 13 years (more than half my life) and hosting a swim competition was my gift to the entire swimming community and the valiant sports itself. Co-hosting with Randal and my childhood friend Em(2x), the weekend was surely memorable to more than 500 plus swimmers and the parents, guest, etc. All ears (and eyes) were definitely on us, there was no margin and there was no space for error. Other than the wild ruckus, the only thing I hated was the sun and the thundering pour of rain in the afternoon! God bless the swimmers! ^_^

| | Bits and pieces of our family's ancestral house/museum/farm, Handumanan, in Davao.
Photos were taken when I visited Davao last June 2008. It is called "Handumanan" by its owner and my uncle, Art Aportadera, the regional director of the defunct Ministry of Human Settlements and now a sought-after development consultant.
He explained that seven years ago while constructing the house in a land in Barangay Lacson that he inherited from his parents (my great grandparents), Magdaleno and Josefa Aportadera, an old lady passed by and inquired what he was doing. He said he was building a house to keep the relics of his parents. The old woman retorted, "Aha! Handumanan." Indeed it is.
All over the place, from the ceiling to the floor are mementos, junks and debris from the old family residence on Suazo St., which was torn down after his mother died. Each item has a story to tell of the family's journey from Dingle, Iloilo to Davao City in the land of promise to search for a life of bliss.
Like other Davao migrants' stories, the family's tale of success for which Uncle Art credited his father (my great grandfather) for three important values: hard work, simplicity and efficiency.
In its simply unpretentious structures of ordinary materials, the desire not to waste resources was strongly evident. Old doors, windows and balustrades from the old house were salvaged and imaginatively translocated. Worn tables, non-operational stove and even a ravaged toilet bowl were recycled for new and different purpose.
Idle equipment, languid furniture, quaint clothes, faded photographs and many other old items found new meaning in a new abode. Handumanan is also home for their creative outputs.
Handumanan is our heritage home, a reminder of the migrants who came to Davao and made it what it is today. It is Davao's Migrant Museum with a heart and soul that allows a rediscovery of the past and appreciation of the values of our forebears. A must-see, I should say, to Dabawenyos and visitors. Only if Uncle Art opens it to the public. Then, it can be Davao's answer to Thailand's M.R. Kukrit Pramoj Heritage Home.

| | I have always heard stories of how beautiful Davao is but I have never thought it was that beautiful! Escaping metropolitan Manila and touring paradise Davao has given me a huge relief.
The view filled with colors of green, the people beautiful and ready to flash a smile, and the air so clean and crisp!
With my grandma, auntie, and cousin (my auntie's first Davao visit in 16 years and my cousin's first visit - they both live in California). They visited to be part of my grandparent's 50th wedding celebration last June 13, 2008. I have never thought home would exist outside of Manila. I have always prided myself with Manila as my "only" home - but it all changed. I was 9 when I last visited Davao, I was young and ignorant to the fact that family existed here.
Hearing the stories of my heritage opened my eyes that I have a family here and a genuine heritage that I am proud of. I will post photos of our ancestral house Handumanan soon. (June 20-22, 2008)

It was such a thrill to watch the special advance screening of “The Dark Knight” last night in Rockwell Powerplant Mall. Aside from its free (I won the tickets, thanks studio23); it was "cool" to be one of the few people in the world to watch it before it officially hits the theatres this week. Ever since I was a child, I have always been a Batman fan. I could still remember the 1960’s TV show Adam West’s Batman and the “holy cow” lines of Robin. Fighting crime since 1939, DC’s Batman has no super powers, no radioactive bites or exposure, not an alien – He is just like you and I – a normal human being, well except for having the fighting skills, high-tech gadgets, and the extra billions, he would be close to “normal.” Starting from being a comic book character, the cultural and media icon has appeared in 7 feature films: Batman: The Movie (1966 – Adam West), Batman (1989 -Michael Keaton), Batman Returns (1992 – Michael Keaton), Batman Forever (1995 - Val Kilmer), Batman and Robin (1997 – George Clooney)... 8 years later... Batman Begins (2005 – Christian Bale), and The Dark Knight (2008 – Christian Bale). What do you think is the best so far? If you have seen most of the superhero flicks this year, then this is definitely a must see movie! It’s a film with interesting and consistent plot and twist that a Batman fan would love; it’s a film where you sit for hours hypnotized by the crafty lines and batman gadgets. It was even funny to see cameos of big celebrities doing some minor roles in the movie. Don’t worry, no spoilers here. For the entire "long" duration of the movie, I could not take my eyes off the performance of Heath Ledger - Amazing really! A standing ovation and iconic performance better that Jack Nicholson! The Joker, one of the greatest villains of all time, is a master criminal whose characterization has varied from a violent sociopath that murders people and commits crimes for his own amusement. Mr. Ledger described the Joker as a "psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy” in which I thought he effectively portrayed. Of all the mind boggling lines thrown in the movie my favourite would be "Why so serious?" - A line that would I believe be a classic movie quote. It made me think of things in life that we take abundantly serious... How many times have we have fun per week? How many minutes do we enjoy our day? How many times do we laugh per hour? In this worldly frenzy, we have become mindless robotic race that have become "so serious" with life. It wouldn’t hurt to unwind, wouldn’t it? Most have forgotten to relax and breathe the fresh air; ironically, Mr. Ledger took life "too seriously" which led to his untimely demise in January 22, 2008. I am a big fan of Mr. Ledger’s work; I used to watch “A Knight’s Tale” over and over again... According to the press releases, the australian tv and film actor died as the result of accidental intoxication/abuse of prescription medications commonly treating insomnia, anxiety, depression, pain, and/or cold symptoms. With every second passing in life, we could never be turn back that time that we have lost. Find time to have fun, find that moment to enjoy, and definitely laugh more! Watch “The Dark Knight.” As the Joker said, let's put that smile on your face! R.I.P. Heath Ledger.

Won tickets to Studio 23's Dark Knight Special Advance Screening! boo yah! Hehehe... ^_^
How many people do u know have reached such milestone? Its amazing to witness a bond, a relationship, a commitment, a marriage to last this long. With all the worldly frenzy, 50 years of marriage is such a rare feat isnt? The belief in each other and the possibility of love. A decision, to ignore or simply rise above the pain of the past. The covenant, which at once binds two souls. The celebration, of the chance for two will always be stronger than one. Like a team, braced against the tempest’s of the world. And love... will always be the guiding force in our lives. It's very rare to see in the past or today two people giving their hearts to each other, unconditionally. And, that's what true love really is. It's not this fairytale life that never knows pain, but it's two souls facing it together and diminishing it with unconditional love. With all the ups and downs, the fairy tale story of my grandparent's union is a proof that sacrifice, commitment, and love will indeed go a long long way. Love stories are always intriguing since it gives every lovers a choice to be inspired and realize the existence of true love. Journeys are always exciting since it travels time and creates history. My grandparent’s love story, more than just a fairy tale, but a solid proof that unconditional love can survive the test of time. Albert and Nena, my grandparents, are both alumni of Silliman University, located in Dumaguete City which at that time is known to be a “Party University." In one of their freshman welcome party for the Medical Department of the said university, Albert had a sight of Nena who was introduced to him by his younger brother. Since Albert and his brothers were schooled in Silliman University since grade school and were known in sports, they always had the edge towards other male students, in short they were the "home boys" and the University campus is their "hood." Nena, called mommy nens by us grandchildren, the beautiful lady from Davao City is quite shy and very reserve. Being young and beautiful as noted by Albert, called big daddy by us. Albert claims she had the best legs and the smallest waist line (not that the she wears a mini skirt but he figured it out). Albert was indeed "love struck" was out there to impress Nena as being the "Man.”
Until 12 midnight struck, Cinderella time! Reality check! Albert realized he needed to finish high school! Albert strived hard to finish high school and pursued Nena in College. Nena has no idea that her persistent suitor was younger than her. Albert triumphantly won the "lucky suitor award" and started dating Nena. Their first date was in Wurling Beach and Albert vividly remembered that was the first time he stole a kiss from Nena. Years passed in college days and Nena had to pursue her medical studies in Manila. This college move never hindered Albert's love for Nena, he decided to take a janitorial job in the University to raise money and be able to visit Nena in Manila. On July 9, 1958, Albert and Nena decided to get married after 7 years of dating. My grandparents was blessed with 6 children (my mom is the eldest) which made their 50 wedding anniversary journey worth the travel. Having showered with love and joy by 13 grand children, "Big Daddy and mommy Nena" are thankful for God's blessings and provisions. It was amazing to witness something so rare and pure, its inspiring to know a story and pass it on let others know what love has given. On their 50th wedding anniversary we celebrate thanksgiving for love, good health, and strong family ties. I love the scene from the movie Enchanted when they played this song, romantic and tragic at the same time. I feel like Patrick Dempsey every time I sing this song!! Hahaha... ^_^
You’re in my arms And all the world is calm The music playing on for only two So close together And when I’m with you So close to feeling alive
A life goes by Romantic dreams will stop So I bid mine goodbye and never knew So close was waiting, waiting here with you And now forever I know All that I wanted to hold you So close
So close to reaching that famous happy end Almost believing this was not pretend And now you’re beside me and look how far we’ve come So far we are so close
How could I face the faceless days If I should lose you now? We’re so close To reaching that famous happy end And almost believing this was not pretend Let’s go on dreaming for we know we are So close So close And still so far
